Praise God… some good news!

Ok… so the neurologist just left our room. He said, “it’s a good thing we did another MRI of her spine.” They had originally thought the tumor was an astrocytoma. Now they’re pretty sure it’s not. With a clearer view it looks like a hamartoma. Which means not malignant. And not technically a tumor.

Hamartoma – a benign, focal malformation that resembles a neoplasm in the tissue of its origin. This is not a malignant tumor, and it grows at the same rate as the surrounding tissues. It is composed of tissue elements normally found at that site, but which are growing in a disorganized mass.

The doctor described it kind of like a mole. It’s still skin, but a bit more of it in a spot than you want. NF-1 patients are prone to hamartomas and they can appear anywhere. They don’t think chemo will affect it, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. These kind of cells grow in pace with your body, and chemo only attacks faster growing cells.

“Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again–rejoice!” – Philippians 4:4
